The Living End - State of Emergency

The Living End is simply a band that can do no wrong; even their disappointing last album was still good fun. But the guys are back and bloody excited to be making an album with Roll On producer Nick Launay. The production is top notch, having the passion of a live show, but all the instruments sound great, the drums booming accordingly, the guitar crunchy and the double bass shining through.

After allegedly being disappointed with their previous effort, the guys in the band really wanted to step up for this one -- and step up they have. The passion and energy is present through every song on the album and the vocals are best that Chris has ever done. Current single "Wake Up" is one of the finest songs they have ever written, with a catchy drum beat, thumping bass and almost haunting guitar and lyrics describing the state of the nation.

Will Hodgkinson: Macca's first guitar - yours for 100,000

100,000 is a lot to pay for any guitar. But it seems that when the Beatles come into the picture, you can name your price for any old piece of junk. In terms of craftsmanship, "the Rex" acoustic steel-string model is not exactly up there with a Martin or a Stradivarius. This eastern European production-line guitar from the mid-50s has steel strings like cheese-cutting wire, a tree trunk for a neck and an original price tag of around 12 guineas. It is what guitarists not so affectionately term, "a pig".

calendarlive.com: Muse

On its three previous releases, this English rock outfit seemed like a casserole stuffed with the leftover vocal stylings of Radiohead and the thundering drums and shredding guitar of Tool. An interesting mix of flavors, but the notes felt so familiar that the result was ultimately unsatisfying.

The trio has apparently let new sounds simmer after a yearlong hiatus, and while "Black Holes and Revelations" (in stores Tuesday) is yet another sonic melange, its elements are fresher. The album opens with tickles of synth, and the first four tracks carry a decidedly more poppy, electronic feel. The first single, "Supermassive Black Hole," is a jaw-dropping departure, boasting a baffling, Justin Timberlake-like falsetto, a bizarrely danceable beat and infectious, cheeky riffs.

The spring featured the all-woman guitar concert "La Guitara" on stage at the Strand Theatre, resulting in a sold out performance. This summer offers the classical guitar of David Leisner, who has made a career out of finding and performing unusual guitar chamber music.
